Stretching for Golf Players
As a golfer, you use a lot of different muscles when swinging a club. So you need to have a good range of motion to be able to make those long drives down the fairway. That’s what makes stretching for golf so important!
From your arms and shoulders to your back and legs, it’s important to keep all of these muscles loose and limber. Try to incorporate some of these stretches into your pre-golfing routine and give your body the support it needs to avoid injury.
Arm Circles
Arm circles help to loosen up the muscles in your arms and shoulders. When these muscles are tight, it can lead to pain in your elbow or wrist. This stretch will help to improve your range of motion so that you can make a smooth swing.
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and extend your arms out to the sides at shoulder height. Slowly start making small circles with your arms, gradually increasing the size of the circle. After about 30 seconds, reverse direction and go for another 30 seconds.
The Seated Twist
This stretch is great for warming up your back and shoulders before a round of golf. Sit on the ground with your legs extended in front of you. Place your right hand behind you and put your left hand on your right knee. twist your torso to the right, then to the left. Repeat this stretch several times on each side.
The Cobra
If you have back pain or a tight back, this stretch is great for loosening up your back muscles! Start by lying on your stomach on the ground with your feet hip-width apart. Place your hands palm-down next to your shoulders. Slowly lift your head, chest, and stomach off the ground, keeping your hips firmly planted on the ground. Hold this position for 15–30 seconds before lowering back down.
The Hamstring Stretch
Hamstring stretches are important for golfers because it helps loosen up the muscles in your legs and hips, which are key for a good swing. Start by lying on your back on the ground with your legs extended straight in front of you. Place a towel around your right foot and hold on to the ends with both hands. Gently pull your right leg up towards your chest, keeping your left leg flat on the ground. Hold this stretch for 15–30 seconds before switching sides.
The Standing Quad Stretch
This stretch is great for your quads, which are the large muscles in the front of your thighs. When golfing, you use your quads to generate power in your swing. This stretch can help you improve your range of motion and prevent pain when swinging. Start by standing up tall with your feet hip-width apart. Bend your right knee and grab your right ankle with your right hand. Gently pull your heel towards your butt, keeping your left leg straight. Hold this stretch for 15–30 seconds before switching sides.
