Exploring the Mind-Muscle Connection

Have you heard of the mind-muscle connection? Simply put it is the deliberate, conscious muscle contraction in your body.

At Stretchly we are known for the place to get an assisted stretch. More specifically we engage a technique called PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation). Each PNF press requires the mind to contract the muscle group being stretched.

In a world that is filled with distractions, this mind to muscle focus does take some practice and coaching. There are two challenges for people with their mind to muscle connection in stretch.

The first is allowing all of their muscles to actually relax, even when they feel tension (the lengthening of the muscle to the point of a stretch). People like to be in control so allowing someone to move their limbs can be a different experience. You can trust that you are in qualified hands and those hands belong to your very own trained FLEXpert who will coach you through this new process and let you know exactly what to expect. Specifically, they will coach you with your breathing, and what muscles you need to focus your attention on!  One of my favorite queues is to “let this muscle feel heavy” which helps to avoid resisting a stretch. Most people get the hang of this in their very first stretch.

The second challenge for some people is that their mind doesn’t know how to connect to targeted muscles groups. The glutes are an area that we see can use their personal training backgrounds to give you exercises to do. We utilize your time in studio to practice or send you emailed homework for on-going practice.

The FLEXperts at Stretchly are happy to partner with you and practice this mind to muscle connection in each session! We are excited to be part of your journey.
